A few times the symptoms of the redirecting problem went away, but soon returned and the virus had reinstalled itself I guess. So far it appears combofix has worked for me! Google Redirect Virus Removal Tool Resave the Hosts file. You don't need to copy a second time.

I got this after the computer had been scanned and cleaned with AVG, SpyBot Search and Destroy and Malware Bytes.
